Some people just can't get that fresh-as-a-daisy breath, no matter how hard they try. Believe it or not, the cause might be in your tonsils.

Most bad breath comes from bacteria that put out foul smelling byproducts. They can live in plaque on your teeth, on your tongue, or in the little pockets that cause gum disease. But sometimes, they're a little further back in your throat.

Renee Beckler told CBS Station WCBS-TV that she has been battling bad breath for years. "I have tried Listerine mouthwash, tongue scraping, oral picks, keeping my mouth clean, eating healthy, less dairy, but it's still the same issues."

She never got results, until doctors at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital discovered she had tonsil stones. The tiny stones are found in little pits in the tonsils and give off a foul, rotten egg-smelling odor.

"You really have to get to the root of the problem and treat the gas-forming bacteria," said Dr. Yosef Krespi.

Tonsil stones can't be brushed or cleaned, so it's difficult for people suffering from bad breath to get rid of tonsil stones on their own.

Doctors performed what's called laser ablation on Renee. They numbed the back of her throat then burned the stones with a tiny laser. The procedure takes less than 20 minutes and patients are left with only a slight sore throat.

There's no bleeding and very little recovery time is needed.

"The success rate is very high simply because we're eradicating the biofilm or the tonsil stone from that particular pocket," said Dr. Krespi.

And in almost all cases the stones stay away for good. They don't grow back.

"I had tried everything so for me it was the only option and it has proven very effective," Beckler said.

Brushing your teeth thoroughly is still your first line of defense, especially to help control gum disease, which is a major cause of bad breath.

Brushing cheeks and gums also helps, but if your breath still isn't fresh, get your doctor to check your tonsils.
